Let me introduce myself. I, Michele (Pisacano) Knight am proud to be co-owner of Knight Accounting & Technology, LLC with her husband, Dave. After graduating from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, VT, I embarked on a career in public accounting with Arthur Andersen and progressed into restaurant management with Qdoba Mexican Grill and Dave and Buster’s. I went on to become an auditor for Vail Resorts, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, and United Launch Alliance. While each of those experiences broadened my experience and perspective, they also proved to me that I was not meant for the corporate world. So, at age twenty-four, I decided to go out on my own and “hang a shingle” as they used to say. I gave myself six months to launch a firm; otherwise I’d go back into the traditional job market. Ten years later, I know I made the right choice!
Why do I love my life? I work primarily from home, in my PJ’s, in breathtaking Keystone, CO. It’s hard to have a bad day when you live in one of the nation’s most beautiful resort areas, and life really does move at a slower pace here. As a result, I stepped out of the rat race years ago, and instead focus on three things: providing great service, enjoying time with my family, and giving back to my community. I do rent office space in the Denver area and I travel back and forth during the busy season, but otherwise I stick close to home and use technology to allow me to serve my clients.
My clients will say that I am not your typical CPA. I’m not sure what typical is these days, but I have been told that I do a few things that others don’t. The simplest of these is simply responding to calls and emails! I never knew this was lacking from other providers, but I do my best to return all calls and emails within 24 hours. Email is always best, as I’m known to sleep with my phone and often reply at off hours! I also believe that every taxpayer has the right to understand their tax situation. Whle others try to justify their work by taking over client’s head and making it all seem complicated, I take a different appraoch. I believe that it’s my job to fully explain the details, as many times as it takes, until my clients feel like they understand their situation. After all, it’s their taxes, not mine, and the key to saving money on taxes is knowledge!
A geek through and through, I love writing, speaking and sharing my love of saving money. In the past few years, I have contributed to stories for NPR Marketplace, the Wall Street Journal, CNN Money, the National Association for Tax Professionals Journal, and I write a regular column in my local newspaper, the Summit Daily. I am a contributing writer and technical editor for the Thomson Reuters courses for accountants, and has authored several books including Forensic Accounting, Introduction to Food & Beverage, and a 2006 Audit Update. I am currently working on a book called “Straight Talk for Small Business Owners” (working title), which should be published in the Summer of 2013. If you want a pre-sale deal on this book, be sure to like my Facebook page or sign up for my e-mail update service on my website!
My other passion is community service and I have been a Rotarian since 2003. I am very proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of Summit County.
My husband, two sons and I reside in Dillon, CO, just a few miles from Keystone Ski Resort. Dave and I were married on January 1st, 2005 (yes, I picked the date for tax reasons!) and we enjoy running, biking, hiking and skiing the Rocky Mountains. Always a planner, when I met Dave, I put together a 30 year plan for our family. Sure enough, our boys arrived right on schedule, and we have two sons born in July 2008 and July 2010. Jacob and Ethan are healthy, active boys who keep us on our toes. Prior to kids, I participated in marathons and triathlons throughout the US, but now you’re more likely to find me at a local skatepark with my sons. While my practice continues to grow, we still do a great job slowing down and spending every moment we can together as a family.
